Opening directories and files from the Mac OS X terminal

Open up the Terminal app (located in Application/Utilities) and navigate to your Mac's Desktop with the following command (replacing your-username-here with your account username):

cd /Users/your-username-here/Desktop 

Now type out the following to target a file or directory of your choice:

open name-of-desktop-filename-or-directory-of-your-choice-here

And your Mac will obligingly open that file (in the appropriate program) or directory (in the Finder) for you.
